My main asset is my home, a small 1 bed/1 bath condo unit, which I bought after working/saving hard for many years while renting. The biggest component of my home's value is its view of a historical landmark. My county specifically taxes my tiny unit higher for this view – but the higher taxes have been tolerable because the taxes have been offset by the higher market value. A developer, after spending almost three years consulting with the neighborhood and county staff, submitted a plan to add more apartment buildings to the property next to my condo building. The plan met the county code and should have been approved. However, earlier this year, the county staff starting pressuring the developer to change the plan to make the buildings MUCH taller – blocking my unit's view of the landmark. The revised plan also takes away my building's street parking, forcing us to compete for spaces farther away in the neighborhood. I am getting tired of spending so much of my time – time I should be spending enjoying my life, my home, and soon Christmas – fighting the revised plan. I have always been fine with the development, as long as it does not block my view of the landmark. My neighbors and I have been so reasonable and willing to compromise with the county staff. Even the developer doesn't want to build the higher versions of the buidlings because it would cost 30% more – costs they'd have to pass along to renters who already complain about high rents in the area. But the county staff kept rejecting the developer's plan for another, more lucrative site elsewhere in the county until the developer submitted the revised plan for the site next to my condo building. The county board's meeting on the revised plan is soon. I have been so stressed about the county board meeting because it is the final meeting on the plan; and the county board almost always rubber-stamps a plan endorsed by the county staff. And the county staff is only endorsing the revised plan. If the county board approves the revised plan, the project will go forward under that design – blocking my view and lowering my unit's property value. All I want is to maintain – and even grow – my blessings – blessings I share with this ministry – by retaining my full view of the landmark.
